Split is Croatia’s second largest city and can be easily reached by plane, train or car. It is
located on the Adriatic coast, about 400 km south of the country’s capital, Zagreb and 230 km north of
Dubrovnik.
By car from Zagreb it can be accessed best via A1, a trip will usually take more than four hours
this way. By plane, Split Airport, located 24 km from Split, has many seasonal flights from all around Europe.
Diocletian’s palace is an integral part of
Split’s downtown. You can visit it without paying entrance fees and most likely, if you ever wander through Split’s
downtown you will have visited some buildings constructed during Diocletian’s time.
If you want to visit the excavated remains of the basement, then you will need to pay a ticket.
The basement hall for instance was the entrance to the palace from the sea.
